Salyersville church set to rebuild

SALYERSVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - A Magoffin County church devastated by the 2012 tornado outbreak is set to rebuild. The church held a groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday.

The EF-3 tornado that ripped through Salyersville took their church building but church members remained grounded in their faith. Now, that faith and perseverance can be seen as the church begins to rebuild.

Life hurts, God heals...has been St. Luke Catholic Church's motto and throughout the past year church members have been living out that motto. Helen Pennington explains, "You hear wind chimes now and you think, well is it going to happen again?"

Pennington took shelter in the church's basement with family members right before the tornado hit, "It got jet black out and we could hear a big explosion upstairs."

The church was leveled, and all six structures on the property were destroyed. Pennington's son knew where his family was and when he heard about the church he immediately began searching the property, digging through rubble for hours. Brian Pennington remembers, "I had a buddy on the rescue squad and I said are my mom and them alive....and he said yes."

Now as the church rebuilds, Pennington says the healing of the St. Luke community and the Salyersville community is evident, "This community, it is a small community, everybody sticks together. There is a lot of need and a lot of love in this community."

Father Bob Damron describes the church, "We are a small faith community, a small church, but we are filled with love and we are filled with faith."

Church officials say the construction process should take about eight months to one year and they want to thank everyone who has donated time and money to make rebuilding possible.
