SALYERSVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - He was a groom who never got to say 'I do'.
Tuesday was supposed to be 49-year-old Donnie Allen and his fiancee's wedding day, but instead Allen is the victim in an alleged murder case.
On what was supposed to be a day of celebration friends and family of Donnie Allen are now mourning his death.
"We have to put our faith in God and go on," said family member and neighbor Mary Ellen Harper.
"He's the best brother I have. He's my whole world, and he's the only one I have," said Allen's sister Janie Mulkey.
Police say Monday afternoon they found 49-year-old Allen dead outside his home on Route 40 in Salyersville. They say he had been shot in the chest at close range with a small calibur handgun, and they believe Daniel Hackworth is responsible for the crime.
Officials say Allen's body was found laying by the hedge line outside his trailer. They say by the time they had been called he had been dead for nearly three hours.
They say they found Hackworth not far from the scene still in possession of a handgun.
Those who knew Allen say they are trying to comprehend the tragedy of losing his life right before he was going to start a new one.
"It was a big shock it was. It was a big shock for everybody it was," said Mulkey.
"It's just a shame that it happened to a wonderful guy, and to leave his family so young," said Harper.
But they say they put their trust in God to help them remember the good times and never forget the man he was.
"He was a good man. He was," said Mulkey.
Hackworth is charged with murder and is being held in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center. He declined our request for an interview.
