School policy requires parents to leave students at the door

Perry County Schools require that parents drop their children off at the door to the school, and not come inside, to ensure security and minimize student distraction.

Combs, Ky. Parents of Perry County School students are not allowed to walk their children inside the school.

"It's just safety so that we know everybody in the building," said A.B. Combs Elementary Principal Michelle Ritchie. "With three, four, five hundred kids depending on which school you're at, it's important to know who's in our building."

Donna Fugate is a substitute teacher and parent, who understands the rationale behind the policy, though she feels at times it could be relaxed.

"You're having a harder time getting them under control and into their classrooms if you've got parents in the way," she said.

Ritchie also said instructional time is important.

"That is a big key thing for us, that instructional time," she said. "So students need every minute in that classroom."
