HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - A new seismic station in eastern Kentucky is now monitoring for earthquakes in the entire region.
It comes on the heels of the 4.3 earthquake that was centered in Letcher County back in November.
Experts wanted to place the seismic station in the ground at the Perry County Library a long time ago, but the recent earthquake sped up the process.
“It is good to know that now we can study this area with greater accuracy to understand the sources so people understand the plan for such earthquakes in the future,” UK Seismologist Seth Carpenter said.
So far, the device has not detected any earthquakes, but it has picked up on some mine blasts in the Perry County area.
