HINDMAN, Ky. (WYMT) - The Knott County Fiscal Court may have balanced their budget but some county employees are now facing the consequences.

Eight county employees have been laid off, and eight others were reduced to 32 hours a week.

Yet, county officials say the Senior Citizens Program was hit the hardest.

Officials with The Knott County Senior Citizens Center say they are barely getting by.

“We're just doing the best we can to try to survive this,” said Director Eva Huff.

The program still receives state and federal funds but the county's latest round of budget cuts has taken the majority of its funding away.

“Right now there's just no money. We had three employees that were let go, and our food budget was cut by $25,000,” said Huff.

Officials were forced to cut 86 people from the program's list of "Home Delivered Meals."

91-year-old Verna Holliday is one of those who depended on the food daily.

“I’ve got children here close to me, but I don't have anybody that can cook for me,” said Holliday.

So in the meantime, she does what she can to get by.

“I do most of my cooking in the microwave, which is not really cooking. I can bake potatoes in it, and I can fix an apple dessert in it and a few things like that,” said Huff.

However, she also understands that she is just one of the many that will have to fend for themselves until the budget is reviewed in July.

“If it's someone that needs it worse than I do then I don't mind giving it up,” said Huff.

One meal is still being provided at the senior citizens center daily.

The director says she hopes to see an improvement in funding in the next few months
