HARLAN, Ky. (WYMT) - A family and community remembered a former Harlan County leader Saturday afternoon at visitation and funeral services.
Delzinna Belcher was a Judge Executive and Magistrate for many years. Police say she was found dead inside her home on Friday.
For Leigh Anne Belcher, there are many memories of her mother-in-law Delzinna Belcher that she says she will never forget; like her spur of the moment wedding to Delzinna's son.
“We called Delzinna and said just come, all we need is you. And she showed up with flowers, cake, and champaign glasses and she thought of it all,” said Leigh Ann.
She says the sudden loss of Belcher, has taken a toll on her family and the community.
Many family members and friends gathered at Saturday's visitation and funeral services at Harlan Baptist Church.
“It's a sad day for me, and it's really a sad day for Harlan County,” said a former co-worker, Paul Caldwell.
“I think it's still a little bit unreal to us. The family is, of course, devastated. She was an amazing woman. She loved her family and her friends and Harlan County,” said Leigh Anne.
Several of her former coworkers in attendance say her character made working with her a pleasure.
“For us every day you got up excited to go in, because of the energy and the excitement, and the fun that occurred in the office,” said former co-worker, Jerry Johnson.
Family members say that excitement for life will be greatly missed.
“She leaves a hole in our hearts that won't ever be filled,” said Leigh Anne.
They say Belcher died nearly one month before the birth of her first great-grandchild.
The graveside service will be held on Monday at 10 am at the Resthaven Cemetery in the Keith community.
Officials say the cause of death is undetermined, but it is not suspicious.
