EVARTS, Ky. (WYMT) - A funeral home was packed Thursday night as people began saying goodbye to a former Eastern Kentucky mayor.

Ronnie king was found shot to death inside his home after a fire in Harlan County, and family members say they are still in shock.

There are still no arrests, and police say there are no new updates in the murder of the former Evarts mayor.

Yet, as the investigation continues, the community began paying their respects to their former leader.

However, after firefighters found Former Evarts mayor Ronnie King shot to death inside his burned home, his family is only left with questions.

“I never thought there would be anyone that would hurt Ronnie. I mean, I can't imagine why. I don't understand it,” said sister, Jerri Mulkey.

Those who worked with King for years remembered their last moments together, and say he was a wonderful employee.

“I walked away from that conversation by going hey if you can't get along with a Ronnie King you can't get along with nobody,” said co-worker, James Dickey.

And many remembered him for the work he accomplished as mayor.

“He had the new city hall built, new police vehicles, and he straightened up the streets a whole lot,” said niece, Lindsey Bowman.

Family members say they expect to find answers and eventually face the person responsible.

“I do serve a god that does know and I hope whoever did it is watching because you will be caught, and I know justice will prevail,” said Mulkey.

The funeral will be held Friday at the Evarts Funeral Home at one pm.

King leaves behind his mother, five sisters and three brothers.
