The community of Martin County gathered Sunday to honor a leader and dear friend.

Sheriff Ray Fields, 74 of Tomahawk, died Thursday at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

Fields was a huge part of the Inez community.

"Ray was a long time legend in the county. He was elected sheriff four times and elected judge once and served all those terms," said John Triplett, friend of Fields.

Sheriff Fields was more than a great sheriff to the people who live in Martin County. He was an asset to the community.

"You could call him at 2:30 or 3:30 in the morning, and he'd still come out. All you had to do was call Ray," said James Brandon Fields, Ray's only grandson.

"He's touched every family in this county one way or another. And he had the biggest heart of anybody you'd ever meet," said Carol Sue Mills, friend of Fields.

People say Fields was best friends with everyone.

"Above what he did was what he was. And that was a person that was full of compassion and kindness for those that he knew," said Martin County Judge Daniel Sparks.

Friends of Fields say he always helped everyone and never asked for a dime in return.

"When I got back from the hospital, he was there with a wheelchair and a walker and wouldn't let me pay for it. That was the kind of person Ray Fields was," said Judge Sparks.

County officials say Fields will be greatly missed in more ways than one.

"I'm going to miss his guidance and advice," said Martin County Sheriff Garmon Preece.

"He'll be terribly missed. He's irreplaceable," said Dr. Lon Lafferty, friend of Fields.

Fields sold medical supplies for many years after serving as county judge and sheriff in Martin County.

Fields battled pancreatic cancer for more than a year.
