BEAVER CREEK (WYMT) - Some Knott County high school students are recovering tonight from a bus accident.

It happened before school along Highway 7 Tuesday morning.

School officials said they narrowly avoided a very serious situation.

Knott County Sheriff's deputies said Timothy Howard was driving his pickup truck when he dropped something, leaned over to pick it up and side swiped the school bus.

Brent Hoover is the transportation director for the Knott County School District.

"There was 33 students on the bus, the bus driver, at present we have seven that have been transported with non-life-threatening injuries," said Hoover.

Hoover said they all were high school students and at least one has been released from the hospital.

"It could have been a lot worse. The driver is responsible with probably saving some severe injuries," said Hoover.

Hoover said students were evacuated from the back of the bus, which is something they are trained to do.

He added how fortunate they were to have a seasoned bus driver behind the wheel.

"He did a remarkable job on two different issues. He avoided a head on collision and he did an excellent job of keeping the bus from overturning," said Hoover.

The bus was not seriously damaged.

Sheriff's deputies tell us Howard will not face any criminal charges as a result of the accident.
