Severe storms cause damage in the Big Sandy region

Posted: Tue 1:27 AM, Apr 05, 2011

Parts of the Big Sandy region were also hit hard by the storms.

In Martin County, a portion of a Family Dollar Store roof fell into the parking lot on top of some cars with people inside.

Witnesses say this Family Dollar sign fell on top of cars with people inside, but no one was injured.

People in the shopping center say the storm came fast.

“The wind picked up really, really hard and then all it once we heard a big lumberment. We came to see what was going on and we see the canopy over here that had fallen on two or three cars,” Janet Endicott said.

These pictures show the sign fell on top of an SUV and a car and Endicott says people were inside. She says a man shopping at Rite-Aid went to help.

But no one was hurt.

Officials say firefighters were able to move the canopy off the cars and to the side of the parking lot.

Family Dollar remains open for business.

County officials are still assessing the damage in other parts of the county.
