WHITESBURG, Ky. (WKYT) - Workers at a southeastern Kentucky hair salon called police after they got a weird feeling about a customer who brought in a young boy dressed in girls clothing.
When deputies arrived, the workers received a big surprise and found out their suspicions were right.
"A vehicle pulled in. It was an older man with a young boy," said Keisha James, a hair stylist who witnessed everything.
The young boy dressed as a girl and the way he was acting were only two of the red flags.
"The man had me cut all the little boy's hair off. His hair was about five or six inches long, and I pretty much shaved him bald. And the man had longer hair, and he got all of his hair cut off and plus his beard shaved off, so they were changing the way they looked," said James.
The women at Reflections & Co. Haircutters in Whitesburg went with their gut feelings and started asking questions.
"I asked him what his name was, and he at first whispered a name that I didn't understand and then he came back and said but they call me Frank," said James.
They all agreed they had to do something to save this child who seemed to be in harm's way.
"She said something is not right. They've abducted this kid. And so she called her husband and he called the police for us," said James.
51-year-old Larry Humphrey was arrested just a couple miles from the salon for not being in compliance with the sex offender registry.
Thankfully for law enforcement in California where Humphrey was wanted, these women spoke up.
Deputies say the child and three others with Humphrey's wife were placed in the custody of social services.
