Sheriff warns of scam using name of Marion Co. deputy killed in line of duty

LEBANON, Ky. (WKYT) - Cards and condolences have come in from all over the country...and even world... to the Marion County Sheriff’s office.

“We’re a very close knit department, but even more so now,” said Sheriff Jimmy Clements, looking through a huge stack of mail that his office has received in the aftermath of Deputy Anthony Rakes’ death.

But he admits all the good in the wake of the tragedy, there’s also been some bad.

“Not everybody has well intentions. They are looking to profit themselves,” said Sheriff Clements.

Someone is soliciting businesses and others, in the name of a memorial fund in Deputy Anthony Rakes’ name. The problem…no such fund exists.

The first incident came with someone approaching a local business for donation.

“It’s sad, when something as tragic as this happen, someone would try to take advantage of someone like that,” said Clements.

The sheriff says if there is a fund drive, it will likely originate from his office with guidance and direction from the Rakes family.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the complaints, so far there’s no solid leads on who it’s coming from.

“If we catch those that do it, we’ll prosecute them,” said Clements.
