Sheriff is appealing ethics commission decision

Perry County Sheriff Les Burgett and his wife are appealing a recent decision made by the county ethics commission.

The commission's ruling found that Mrs. Burgett's employment in the sheriff's office dating back to 2009 violated the local code of ethics.

Sheriff Burgett says the commission overreached its authority by addressing an issue for which there was not a complaint and that he was not notified of the commission's September meeting.

Officials tell Mountain News a special fiscal court meeting is set and this issue is expected to be discussed.
