LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) - Due to an increase in burglaries and thefts in Laurel County, the Sheriff's Office is beginning a new program that they hope will cut down on those crimes.

Many in Laurel County are questioning just how secure their homes are when they leave.

But whether you are away for just a few hours or several weeks, deputies want to make sure your home is not targeted by thieves.

John Duke says he has done some things differently since someone tried to break in to his home earlier this month.

“It's changed my life. It's changed my thought pattern… If we hadn't had been home that day I'm sure that guy would have broken in that front door,” said Duke.

So in an effort to keep break-ins like this from happening in the future, the Laurel County Sheriff's Office has started a program called "Away From Home Patrols."

Home owners can notify the Sheriff's Office when they will be gone for an extended period of time, and officers will patrol the area.

Police say having the extra presence in the areas farther out in the county will be the extra preventative measures they need.

“We can't be everywhere at once. However, if we can concentrate our efforts in areas that are problem areas, or if we know that they're going to be gone. We're going to be out on patrol anyhow, so why not swing through certain parts of the county where we can help out,” says Gilbert Acciardo with the Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say people asked for the program because of an increase in home burglaries.

“They want to feel safe and secure in their homes. They want to be able to leave and go shopping and go somewhere and come back and everything that they own still be there,” said Acciardo.

This is a peace of mind that officers hope they can give back to the community.
