Shooting Investigation in Laurel County

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) -- A man is behind bars in Laurel County after allegedly shooting his girlfriend in the ankle.

The sheriff's office says Richard Lawson was intoxicated when he shot at his girlfriend, who was trying to leave their home during an argument.

Deputies found Lawson passed out with a rifle in his hands and the couples 11 year-old son in the home.

Gena Smith was sent to St. Joseph hospital in London for treatment.

Lawson is charged with first degree assault domestic violence and first degree wanton endangerment.
