MOUSIE, Ky. (WYMT) - Some say it started out as a property dispute but ended with one man in the hospital and another in jail.
It happened late Tuesday night in Knott County.
Officials say Hillard Smith allegedly shot Travis Scott.
Police are not sure why Travis Scott was cutting through this property just off Highway-550 in Mousie around 10:00 Wednesday night. But they say the 24-year-old was shot in the stomach by handgun-wielding property owner, Hillard Smith, after a brief conversation.
“Just because someone steps on your property or whatever, that doesn't give you the right to take something into your own hands,” Trooper Tony Watts said.
The 28-year-old Smith is now in jail, charged with assault.
Smith is behind bars at the Kentucky River Regional Jail in Perry County.
We requested an interview to get his side of the story, but he declined.
Neighbors say he is not the type to shoot someone.
“The Smith boy has been a pretty decent neighbor here in the community. Pretty outstanding boy as far as I know. Ii understand that there must have been some reason that he shot him,” Carl Gibson said.
But that does not lessen the anger of the victim's family.
“He needs to do his time or whatever. Whatever he's done he needs to pay for it. cause that's wrong. That's not good,” Scott’s cousin Kathy Wicker said.
Now the question is, what prompted Smith to allegedly pull the trigger?
Watts says the best thing to do if someone trespasses on your property is call police.
Scott was taken to the UK Medical Center.
At last check, he was listed in serious condition.
