Siblings accused of assaulting a referee plead guilty to lesser charges

A Letcher County man and his sister, accused of assaulting a referee at an elementary school basketball game, plead guilty to lesser charges.

Michael Eldridge says Billy Smith struck his head and arms repeatedly.

Billy Smith and his sister Nikki Sanders were arrested in October.

Smith pleaded guilty to an amended charge of assault on a sports official.

He was sentenced to six months in jail and given 18-months probation.

Sanders pleaded guilty to an amended charge of menacing.

She was sentenced to 45 days in jail and given 18-months probation.

Smith and Sanders are also not allowed to be at any events where Eldridge is officiating.

Both have a restitution hearing scheduled for April 8th.
