BREATHITT Co., Ky. (WYMT) - Folks at the Kentucky Department of Highways District 10 in Breathitt County are putting everyone on notice.

Public Information Officer H.B. Elkins said starting next week personnel from district 10 will remove signs illegally placed on state right of way.

Elkins said this is more than a safety hazard.

"Advertising signs are not something that we grant permission for and therefore it's illegal for those to be placed on the state right of way," said Elkins.

Whether it's the candidates or their supporters, he said everyone just wants to spread the word.

"It does end up being a problem, not only in the 10 counties that we cover, in all the counties in Southern and Eastern Kentucky," Elkins said.

Their goal is to make sure the highways are as safe as possible for both drivers and work crews.

"We have to make preparations for spring maintenance season," Elkins said.

Any signs removed will be kept for two weeks at the state highway garage in the county where they were picked up.

Sign owners may claim their signs during that period. After two weeks, the signs will be discarded.
