BIG CREEK, Ky. (WYMT) A small, single engine plane made an emergency crash landing Monday in Clay County. It happened just off Highway 66, near the Big Creek area. Fortunately, the pilot walked away unhurt, but the situation could have ended much worse.

There isn't much to see now. Crews worked pretty quickly to clean up the wreckage after an airplane crash-landed on this stretch of Highway 66 in Clay County Monday night.

65-year old David Styer of Mt. Gilead, Ohio says he was on his way to Middlesboro when he ran out of fuel. He was about to touch down when a couple of pedestrians appeared in front of his aircraft on the roadway.

"He veered to the right to avoid striking one of those pedestrians, and he clipped a guide wire with the wing of his plane," said state police Trooper Nick Metcalf.

First responders arrived on the scene around 5:30 Monday evening and had the wreck cleaned up in a couple of hours. Amazingly, no one was hurt.

"We're thankful there wasn't no injuries, nothing," said Michael Sparks with the Big Creek Fire Department. "The guy was fine. He was out walking around talking on his cell phone when we arrived on the scene."

We spoke with the pilot who made the emergency landing, however he declined our request for an interview. It's not known why the pilot was headed to Middlesboro.
