WHITESBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - A few miles made a big difference in what kind of weather you had Thursday. Many stayed dry, but folks in counties along the Virginia and Tennessee borders picked up several inches of snow. There was no snow in Hazard, but just down the road in parts of Letcher county this afternoon, it was a completely different story.

County road crews were called in around 2 p.m., as the first flakes began to fall.

"In the past we've had this a lot, so we're kind of prepared when we see it coming we start getting ready for it," said Letcher County Deputy Judge-Executive Eddie Meade.

Some parts of Letcher County received more than six inches of snow within a few hours. At one point, a house-sized boulder slid down a portion of Pine Mountain, knocking out power for some people along Limestone Drive outside Whitesburg.

"We got roads that we tried to work, get them quicker that's on the sides of the mountains and stuff, but if an emergency comes up, we'll pull off and get a truck right on it," explained Chester Smith with the Letcher County Road Department.

Thanks to a mild first half of this winter, officials say road crews have plenty of gravel and salt on hand to keep roads clear. Letcher County officials say that is welcome news for the county's road fund.

"The milder the winter the easier it is on our budget," said Meade. "If it's a bad winter you're out overtime gravel, salt, you know breakdowns, fuel. It'll hit you hard in the budget if it's a bad winter."

Still, officials say, if this was the last snow of the season, they would not mind a bit.

Crews had the main roads more or less clear by the time the sun set Thursday in Letcher County. They say they will continue working through the night until all the roads are clear.
