HYDEN, Ky (WYMT) - When it snows in eastern Kentucky, it usually forces many schools to close some for days at a time.
A pilot program that's slowly being implemented into some school districts is changing that.
It's called "Snowbound." Students either use online programs or teachers send home packets with students for them to complete.
Officials in Leslie County hope the program prevents gaps in learning.
"Anytime that you have those prolonged periods of being out of school and interrupting the learning, it's kind of like starting over when you come back," said Anthony Little who is the Director of Pupil Personnel for Leslie County Schools.
So far Leslie County has used eight of the possible 10 snowbound days which actually count as a day of school.
On average, the district misses more than 20 days of school a year due to the weather.
"Those prolonged gaps in learning adversely affect testing, student learning and are a detriment to our district. So we had to come up with some means of continuing meaningful instruction on those days," said Little.
School leaders say they hope the "Snowbound" program will continue in the future.
