Somerset Police searching for cemetery meth cook

Somerset, Ky. (WKYT) - It is a place that most treat with tremendous amounts of respect but police in Somerset say someone used the cemetery to make an illegal and dangerous substance.

The manager of Somerset Cemetery was checking out some old gravestones Saturday when she found something that she knew wasn’t quite right.

“She ran across a duffel bag that looked suspicious,” said Lt. Shannon Smith with Somerset Police.

She called police and the officer quickly knew the suspicions were right on target. Inside were chemicals and other ingredients used to make meth. Soon the fire department joined police at a place where meth labs are usually not found. Yet police admit they’re not surprised.

“Meth labs can be found literally anywhere. The trunk of a car, hotel room, wooded area,” Lt. Smith said.

Police say the chemicals never posed a risk to anyone, but the potential is always there with meth for something tragic.

“The cemetery manager did exactly what was required. They identified something suspicious and called police,” said Smith.

Police say they don’t know who the meth cook is but they hope to use forensic evidence found inside the bag to track that person down.
