Murder suspect's attorney claims shooting was justified

Updated: Wed 8:36 PM, Sep 28, 2011

The testimony was that Matthew Patterson went to his ex-girlfriend’s apartment to pick up some of his belongings. Police say he thought he and his ex where the only ones there. But because she was fearful of Patterson’s violent streaks, police said she told them she had others in another room.

Lt. Shannon Smith says when Patterson became enraged during an argument another female came out, who was thrown against the wall. That’s when Jeremiah Litton and Glenn Blevins intervened. Smith said one had Patterson in a headlock and another one was hitting Patterson. Patterson grabbed his gun and fired several shots. Litton later died, Blevins was treated for a gunshot wound to the back.

During cross examination defense attorneys painted a picture of self defense, that Patterson fired the shots because he felt Litton and Blevins were beating him. It was a lot for family members in the courtroom, including Litton’s mother.

“I just grieve for the way it happened, I wish it wouldn’t have happened, because then I wouldn’t be in the public. I wouldn’t be in the public eye, this is a very private time for me. And I personally would like to go and run and hide somewhere, be alone for awhile,” said Pam Arnold, Jeremiah Litton’s mother.

The judge did find probably cause and sent the case to a grand jury. It’s up for review again November 16th.
