A brother and sister have been arrested after police say they were responsible for a string of burglaries in downtown Somerset.
"It's kind of unusual that in this particular case the brother and sister are the exclusive members of the criminal activity," says Lt. Shannon Smith, a detective with the Somerset Police Department.
Kalee and Jonathan Tyler West were arrested last night. Police say the brother and sister duo are responsible for four burglaries near the areas of Rosewood Avenue, Grande Avenue, and Richards Court from July to August. Lt. Smith says one of the victims saw the burglars, and that helped them solve the case.
"One of the victims was able to see a white male fleeing from her residence. She gave the description of a black vehicle they jumped into and a female driving the vehicle. This added up with some other information we were able to develop over the past couple months which led us to believe that Kalee and Tyler were actually involved in the crimes and everything fell into place last night," says Lt. Smith.
Lt. Smith says the two stole jewelry and checks from the homes and got unsuspecting people to help them cash those checks. He says that also helped police catch the pair.
"They were involved with some other people in passing those checks so eventually we got the information we needed that gave us a strong feeling that these two are involved," says Lt. Smith.
Lt. Smith says there are more burglaries in the downtown area that haven't been solved. He says police haven't connected the West siblings to those cases, but they're working hard to solve them.
"We've got the same two guys on those cases that we had on this one so I feel sure that if it can be solved these two will get that accomplished," he says.
People who live in the neighborhood say they feel safer after the arrests. Police say there were able to recover some stolen property.
