It started as a crime of opportunity. “He saw that the attendant was not behind the desk,” said Gilbert Acciardo, with the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.
So in the early hours of the morning, police say the thief went looking for that desk clerk. The surveillance video shows him searching the hallways and the breakfast area. When she couldn’t be found, he proceeded to help himself to the hotel’s money.
“He went behind the desk, the desk drawer was locked, he had to fumble around through some other desk drawers to find the key to the desk drawer,” said Acciardo.
All the while, every action of his, is captured and recorded. “I’m not sure he knew the cameras were there; he doesn’t try to conceal his face or his identity in any way,” said Acciardo.
At this point, police think it’s just a coincidence that this burglary is similar to ones that happened in and around Lexington. They say they have reason to believe their suspect is a local resident.
“We think this guy is associated with the north Corbin area, a canvass of the area showed us that he’s been in the area before,” said Acciardo.
Police don’t know who he is but they’re hoping you will.
