HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - A stabbing suspect says an argument over a stolen hat led to a stabbing that happened in Perry County Saturday afternoon.

19 year-old Jonathan Stewart says he went to the home on Noble Mountain Drive to smooth things over.

“I was just coming to talk to them about getting a hat back. I mean, I wasn't mad at them or nothing over getting the hat because they thought that was some guy’s hat,” said Stewart.

But what started as a verbal argument between Stewart and Steven Sizemore, soon turned physical.

Stewart says he picked up a knife from the ditch to defend himself.

Police say Stewart ran from the home after Sizemore was stabbed.

Officers found him not far away and arrested him on assault charges, but he claims it was only in self defense.

"I know I'm not crazy enough to force a knife into somebody because I didn't force that knife into him. Sure didn't,” said Stewart.

He now regrets going to the home in the first place, saying, “I wish I had never went up there I had 5 people telling me not to even go up there. I still wouldn't listen. I just don't know.”

We reached out to Sizemore, but he had no comment.

Sizemore is in the hospital in stable condition. Officials say he should be released before Monday morning.
