Stand in the Gap expanding awareness efforts

HARROGATE, Tn. (WYMT/WVLT) - Three states are uniting behind one cause: the end of drug and alcohol abuse in our area.

"Stand in the Gap" continues to grow their effort to strengthen their group, and making life better for all. The group held it's monthly meeting at LMU's Tex Turner Arena in Claiborne County, Tennessee.

The gathering was a chance to plan future events while trying to coordinate with federal leaders.

"Stand in the Gap" started in late 2011 with folks from Claiborne County in Tennessee, Bell County in Kentucky and Lee County in Virginia taking part, and were backed by many churches of differing denominations.

Now, you can add Campbell, Scott, Union, Hawkins and Hancock Counties to the list of counties involved.

"Unless you are touched by it, you don't understand the depth of how much it goes. Actually to the depravity that it's causing, the poverty it's causing. The broken families and all of the heartaches that go with that," said Edwin Robertson from "Stand in the Gap."

The key part of their plan is to get more federal help.

They want grants to teach more kids about the dangers of drugs, more chances for those addicted to get help, and for a coalition to make it easier to catch drug offenders who cross state lines.
