PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Some more Eastern Kentucky kids got a little extra holiday cheer Friday by doing some Christmas shopping with state police.
State Police Post 9 held its annual Shop with a Trooper event at the Pikeville Walmart on Friday. They say they had nearly 80 kids who participated in the event.
Dozens of kids and troopers roamed up and down aisles of toys, movies and clothes.
"It's a humbling experience. It's changed our lives as troopers to be able to do this," said Trooper Shaun Little.
They examined every item carefully, trying to determine what they really wanted for Christmas.
"Myself and everyone else got into this work to help people, and I truly think you're helping people, especially children. I can't think of anything, a better purpose than that," said Trooper Derek Sturgill.
Each of the kids was given $100 to buy whatever they wanted for Christmas.
"The majority of the time, they're not concerned with getting items for Christmas for themselves. It's either for siblings or grandparents or mom or dad," said Trooper Little.
Trooper Sturgill said the child he helped was an example of that, "My kid, he didn't hardly want to buy for himself. He wanted to buy for everyone else. he truly was in the christmas spirit."
Troopers say the chance to spend time with kids in their community is one they cannot pass up.
"It gives us an opportunity to as the state police employees, troopers, to interact with these children that may have not had positive interaction with a trooper before," said Trooper Little.
They say they are thankful for the opportunity to give those kids a little Christmas cheer.
"Probably if you asked everyone here they would all agree it's one of their favorite times of year," said Trooper Sturgill.
After they took the kids shopping they gave them each a food basket and took them across the street to McDonald's and treated them to lunch.
Troopers say the program is made possible through donations made by people and businesses in the area.
