State Senator wants immediate action on dangerous curve

FRANKFORT – A two-person fatality incited Senator Ray S. Jones II, D-Pikeville, to request immediate action on the hazardous curve on US. 460. Senator Jones wrote a letter to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Mike Hancock asking the cabinet to expedite the reconstruction project of the curve on U.S. 460 at Millard Middle School, and to take other immediate steps to make the curve less dangerous.
Senator Jones asked the Cabinet to immediately erect additional signage and warning lights, both east and west of the curve, to help warn drivers unfamiliar with this road of this dangerous condition. Senator Jones has also asked the rumple strips and high friction surface treatments be applied for added safety.
During the 2010 Special Legislative Session, Senator Jones helped secure $7 million in the 2010-2012 Biennial Highway Transportation Plan for the reconstruction of the curve and the project is currently in the design phase. During the last year, there have been over a dozen collisions on this road, most recently a double fatality involving a couple from Grundy, Virginia.
“I think it’s important that this project be moved from the design phase to construction immediately,” Senator Jones said. “The traffic volume on this stretch of road is very high – especially during the school year. Hundreds of students on dozens of buses as well as parents and other citizens travel this road. It’s a dangerous curve and we need to take the necessary steps to make it safe as soon as possible.”
Senator Jones has requested a meeting with Secretary Hancock to discuss this critical issue.
Senator Jones represents the 31st district that includes Johnson, Martin and Pike counties.
