WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - Police have recovered thousands of dollars worth of stolen equipment in Whitley County.

Police say thieves took valves and pipes from the old water intake station in Williamsburg and sold it to a scrap yard.
Investigators found the items at the scrap yard on Tuesday.

"You can take it to the scrap yard and get money off of it and that's exactly what they did," said Wayne Bird, Williamsburg Police Chief.

The water plant supervisor says each one weighs at least 800 pounds. The water intake station on the Cumberland River is so secluded, he said you need an ATV to get there.

"Where it's at, it'd be hard for anybody to get it out," said Steve Reeves, Water Plant Supervisor.

"These two individuals worked very hard to get the items they took because these are heavy items. They spent some time cutting it and working and they took it to the scrap yard and got a mere $1,500 out of it," said Chief Bird.

Police say the items are worth much more than that and the theft could cost the city thousands of dollars.

"Pretty substantial loss really. If anybody wanted to use them again, it's going to be basically impossible to use again without redoing a lot, putting a lot more money back into it," said Reeves.

Police are not releasing any details on the two suspects because there are no charges filed yet. Chief Bird says they are meeting with the Whitley County Commonwealth's Attorney to discuss the case and plan to take it to a grand jury.

"We'll proceed to the grand jury with indictments hopefully," Chief Bird said.

Police say the only motive they have is that the suspects simply wanted money.

The water plant supervisor says the old intake station is not used anymore, so the theft did not affect water service.
