Store manager fights back during attempted robbery

Updated: Sat 1:05 PM, Jan 05, 2013

HINDMAN, Ky. (WYMT) - A store manager and her husband took matters into their own hands on Friday when police say a man tried to rob her store for the second time.

39-year-old Eric King was arrested Friday afternoon for allegedly robbing the Ameri-Cash in Hindman.

State Police now say Eric King is also responsible for robbing the same Ameri-Cash on December 18th.

But Friday’s robbery had a different ending for King.

Police say the second time around, Manager Brenda Patton and her husband, Willie, were ready to fight back.

The couple says they acted on instinct and refused to let King get away with cash for the second time.

Witnesses say the struggle started inside of the store but ended in the parking lot.

That’s where Brenda and Willie pinned the robber to the ground until police arrived.

Police say it's becoming more common for store-owners to take matters into their own hands.

Ameri-Cash's Co-Owner Rita Daniels plans to step up security even more now to ensure that Friday’s attempted robbery will be the last.

Eric King is charged with two counts of attempted robbery.

He is being held in the Kentucky River Regional Jail and declined our request for an interview.
