HARDY, Ky. (WYMT) - A Pike County community is on alert.
Police say a handful of reports have come in from the Hardy community about someone stealing out of cars and garages.
They do have a suspect, and one couple says they caught him stealing from their car.
Brenda Bogar says she and her husband Joe woke up to a strange sight Wednesday morning at their home in Hardy.
"My husband noticed a boy standing in our yard, so we stood there and he opened our car door. He got in the front seat," she said.
Knowing something was wrong they rushed outside.
"He tells him to get out of the car. He won't, so he pulls him out of it. Well by now I'm out in my gown and I go, 'What do you think you're doing?' He goes, 'I'm looking for my dog.' Can you believe that?" said Bogar.
Then Thursday morning they noticed a bag of change adding up to about $57 was missing from the car.
They reported it and learned they were not the only ones hit.
"Cash, cell phones. We had some gas leaf blowers, household items," said Deputy Billy McCoy, listing off some of the items reported stolen.
Deputies say they do have a suspect who is being cooperative, and they are not releasing his name until charges are officially filed.
"We don't know how widespread it is because a lot of people don't realize anybody has been there because a lot of it is in the garages or in their vehicles and they're just now coming out and discovering a lot of it," said McCoy.
Now the entire community is on guard, keeping watch and hoping they are not the next targets.
"I just told my husband now we got to get a garage door up because we have stuff in there that's expensive. We'll lose it," said Bogar.
Deputies say they have recovered some of the stolen items.
