BELFRY, Ky. (WYMT) - Some students in Pike County recognized Fire Prevention Week with a little hands on practice fighting fires.

The Belfry Fire Department brought the fire safety trailer to Southside Elementary School Friday.

It simulates real life fire situations, and gives kids a chance to learn how to react in those times.

"When they hear the sound of fire, when they feel heat coming, when they can put their hand on the door and feel heat, they know how to react, and if it ever comes to that point they know how they'll react to it rather than waiting until when that time comes," said Belfry Fire Chief Nee Jackson.

It also simulates weather emergencies, like tornadoes, so they can better prepare for those times too.

Officials say the kids enjoy the hands-on learning.

"The kids, they don't quit talking about it. They can't quit talking about it. They want to see it again tomorrow, so you know everywhere it's been positive results," said Jackson.

Officials take the trailer across the region all year to give people of all ages the experience.
