HAZARD, Ky (WYMT) - Hazard Community and Technical College was back on a regular schedule Thursday after taking a day off following the shooting.

Counselors were on hand to help students who were struggling to deal with what happened on campus Tuesday night.

Jackie Cornett and Caitlin Cornett, a former student at the school, were gunned down in the parking lot.

A third victim, Taylor Cornett, would die on Wednesday at UK Hospital in Lexington.

As students went back to class on Thursday many were left shaken.

"The mood on campus today(Thursday) has been a little mixed. I mean people did want to come back and get started today particularly because we are in the first week of class," said Dr. Steve Greiner who is HCTC's president.

He says some students were a little hesitant to return to the classroom, so he had a counselor on hand to help.

"We are expecting and prepared for stories about anxiety, grief, maybe trouble just returning to the classroom, and we are here just to talk through that," said Andrea Brooks, a clinical supervisor at Kloth Counseling Clinic in Hazard.

College officials have even set up a memorial in the parking lot where the deadly shooting happened to help students through the grieving process.

"Even though one of the individuals had a relationship with the college, all three of them their lives touched so many people in this community and so many of our employees and students that knew them," said Dr. Greiner.

President Greiner hopes this memorial will help the entire community remember and grieve for the lives that were lost.

President Greiner says he is proud of the swiftness and the professional way his staff and the students responded on Tuesday night.
