Prestonsburg High School students and others held a memorial service to remember a classmate killed last year.
Lakyn Pennington died in a car crash last year during the first week of school, the day after her 18th birthday.
This would have been her birthday, so today dozens of her family and friends gathered at her grave and released balloons in her memory and mourned her loss before school starts.
Cassidy Johnson said, "We start senior year without her. That was the most important year to her and she couldn't wait until we got to senior year. Everybody gathered to show how much we love and miss her."
Pennington's friends say they plan to use her death to remind others to drive safely.
