Study says organic foods are not much better for you

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - A new study found that organic food might not be that much better for you.

Doctors at Stanford University said organic fruits and vegetables have slightly more vitamins, but the cost is not necessarily worth the extra nutrition.

From peanut butter to brown sugar, nearly every food product is available in organic form, often at a slightly higher price. So is the extra few dollars on your grocery bill worth it?

"I don't think it's right for stores to jack up the price just because it says that it's organic," said Roberta Epperson, who owns the Amish Deli where organic products are used and sold. "But i think that when it really comes down to eating what's better for you, then the cost is worth it."

Organic products are supposedly exposed to fewer pesticides than their traditional counterparts. Even so, the study suggested going organic does not guarantee better health.

"I think the clientele that we have here are going to be looking for the things that are better for them in the long run," Epperson said. "When you're switching over to organic, you're not just thinking, 'Ok, it's just for now.' You're thinking long term that it will be better for your health in the long run."

One health official said the study did not take into account the wide range of health factors of organic consumers.

"How many medications are they on, do they exercise, are they getting plenty of sleep, what kind of stress level do they have?" said Claudean Oakley, an herbalist and nutritionist.

Oakley said eating organic can improve your health, but only when coupled with other healthy lifestyle choices.
