FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - House Speaker Greg Stumbo is calling on
lawmakers to support legislation aimed at curbing prescription drug
abuse despite concerns voiced by the Kentucky Medical Association
about some of the provisions.
Stumbo sent a memo to House lawmakers Tuesday telling them that
doctors are prescribing high doses of dangerous drugs that are
being diverted to the black market and abused by addicts, many of
whom are dying from overdoses. Stumbo was responding to a KMA
letter opposing putting the attorney general's office in charge of
monitoring the prescribing practices of Kentucky physicians.
Lawmakers are scheduled to reconvene in Frankfort on Thursday
for the final day of this year's legislative session. The
prescription drug bill is one of several matters on the agenda.
The legislation is House Bill 4.
