FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - House Speaker Greg Stumbo says he doesn't like a proposal that could lead to the phasing out of basic
landline service in Kentucky in yet another step of telephone
The Prestonsburg Democrat said Wednesday he also doesn't sense
much support for the measure among House lawmakers.
Telephone companies have been pressing lawmakers for legislation
that would lift a regulation to provide the cheapest landline
service in areas where other options are available.
A vote on the legislation, sponsored by Republican Sen. Paul
Hornback of Shelbyville, could come any day in the Senate.
Opponents claim the legislation would be especially harmful for
the poor in Kentucky's rural areas who use basic phone service.
The legislation is Senate Bill 12.
