Lexington Mayor Jim Gray says a task force for has given initial approval for plans to renovate Rupp Arena.
The renovation would include the addition of seats and suites inside the bowl of Rupp Arena. It would also involve a renovation of Lexington Center.
The renovation is expected to take approximately two years. Officials say the renovations would not force UK to play home games somewhere else. They also say renovations would not interfere with the Boys' Sweet 16 tournament held at Rupp every year.
The renovation plans must still be approved by the city of Lexington and the Lexington Center board.
Officials hope to have approval by the end of January.
The task force released its findings back in November. It found renovating Rupp Arena would cost less than building a new one.
