Teen killed in accident honored by fellow students

A group of students at Knox County Middle School came together to make a tablecloth to honor their classmate, Shane Smith, who died in a tragic accident in April.

"Our class was like a family," explains middle school teacher Mayla Mckeen, "when we found out about Shane's death it destroyed us.
Mrs. Mckeen teachers a reading class which Shane Smith was a part of. The class met every day for months, "we didn't want him to feel like we forgot about him so decided to do something to honor him."

The Kentucky Art Council offered invited Kentucky schools to participate in a canvas painting project for the Derby celebration in downtown Frankfort on Saturday. "When we found out about this opportunity we knew this was the perfect way to remember him. He use to always doodle this one drawing on his folders and homework assignments so we though this was perfect."

The tablecloth will be on display this Saturday, May 5th, at the Governor's Derby Celebration. The tablecloths will be for the picnic tables. Each table will be on the Old State Capitol grounds and will be shaped like a horse and covered with one of the blankets.
