It was Sunday morning news that many in Wayne County weren’t expecting.
“Everyone woke up yesterday in shock and disbelief at what happened,” said Tony McCracken of Monticello, the Wayne County High School girls soccer coach.
19 year old Ashley Cross was killed when the car she was riding in was “t-boned” by another car at the intersection of U.S. 150 and Ky.461 in Rockcastle County. Cross was on her way home to Monticello after watching the Final Four games in Lexington Saturday night with friends. Several other passengers in both cars were hurt. The cause remains under investigation. And those who knew Cross question why she’s gone.
“A 19 year old with so much promise, so much to look forward to in life. It's been hard to absorb it,” said McCracken.
Ashley Cross spent two years on the Wayne County High School soccer team. Her coach says it’s what she did off the field that truly made her special.
“She was a coach’s dream,” said McCracken, who added that Cross was the kind of student-athlete that was destined for success.
“Tthe academic part. She was a Governor’s Scholar. The athletic part of it. Just so much to offer the world,” he said.
“I think that a lot of people, her classmates, couldn’t wait to see what she was going do,” said Joey Neal, who coached Cross during a recent Junior Miss event.
