BEAR BRANCH, Ky. (WYMT) - While many kids are relaxing and enjoying time away from school, some students from Tennessee are spending their spring breaks in service to others. More than one hundred students and adults volunteered at the Big Creek Mission in Leslie County.

The volunteers from the Volunteer state grabbed hammers and drills, building staff quarters at the facility, which used to be Big Creek Elementary School.

Others served at area nursing homes and schools. The mission's director says everyone worked for a common goal.

"Out of our love for you and our love for the Lord, we just want to offer everything we have to this community, so that we can show the love of Christ right here," said director Kevin Rogers.

Some students spent the day talking with former members of the armed services at the Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard.

"They just kept to themselves, but once you started talking to them they couldn't stop talking and they kept going, and I met some really wonderful people," said Kelsie Lauhun, a student volunteer from Thompson Station Church in Tennessee.

The mission's director says he is very grateful to the students for giving freely of their time. He says the mission couldn't do its work without them.

"We would not exist without the volunteers who come in," he said. "We are dependent upon the churches from all over the country who come into this area to serve the people."

He says it is amazing what kids can accomplish with compassion, and just a few power tools. Big Creek Missions began in 2002 and offers services that include free home repairs, food distribution, and teen outreach.
