People living in Hazard now have a reason to make sure they always keep their car doors locked. Police say someone is going around the backwoods area of Hazard at night and stealing things out of people's unlocked cars.
If you don't always keep your vehicle locked, now is the time to make sure you do. Some people living in the backwoods are of Hazard, like Bobby Inguagiato, had to learn that the hard way. He says he realized on Tuesday that his truck was robbed.
"I usually keep it locked up but I guess this one night, the wrong night, I left it unlocked and I happen to have some items missing," said Inguagiato.
Police now have 5 reported break-in's. They say someone is finding unlocked cars and stealing from them, leaving the locked vehicles untouched.
"Taking things such as laptops, cell phones, PDA's, cash. just anything they can get any money out of, they're taking out of these vehicles," said Seargant Paul Campbell of the Hazard Police Department.
He says keeping you door locked is very important.
"Don't give the thieves a chance to break in your vehicles. If they see something like a GPS mounted in the windshield, obviously someone's going to say hey there's an easy catch right there."
Inguagiato says keeping his truck locked is now a must, and recommends others to do the same.
"Not only do I lock it when I get out of the truck, I lock it before I go to bed. So I'm sitting around the house, I go to sleep, I hit the lock button just for good measure," Bobby said.
Police say parking in a well-lit area and taking all valuable items out of your vehicle can help deter the thieves. Police say they do have some suspects in mind, but they need the help of the community to confirm them. If you have any information, contact the Hazard Police Department.
