CORNETTSVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Oct. 19 marked the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Leatherwood in the Civil War. Folks in Perry County are marking the occasion all weekend.
On Saturday, Oct. 27, a battle re-enactment will take place in the same spot in Cornettsville where Confederate and Union soldiers fought a century and a half ago. Kerry Crutcher, the event chairman, said re-enactors say they also bring school children in to learn about the history. He said more than 1,500 showed up on Friday afternoon.
"Nowadays the kids never see it," said Cruthcher.
"They don't know anything about that kind of lifestyle or what they had to do or how people lived so we are showing that to them."
Crutcher said the goal was to teach future generations.
"Hopefully it stimulates some interest and they will read up on stuff and develop an interest in history," said Crutcher.
Organizers expected thousands of people to attend.
