Thousands without power in Pike County

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Pike County was one of the hardest hit counties in the Eastern Kentucky.

Several thousand people were still without power Tuesday evening, and many could be without it for at least another day.

The power outages were a surprise to many including Kentucky Power officials.

The snowstorm hit parts of Pike County hard Monday night into Tuesday leaving some families having to find alternate sources of heat.

Kenneth Osborne says he has seen it before, but did not expect to see it again.

"The hurricane gave a warning, but this snow, we didn't expect it," he said.

He saw more than one foot of snow in some places around his home, something nature itself was not ready to handle.

"These oaks that still got leaves, it's the wrong time of year for the snow," said Osborne.

He was right. The heavy, wet snow accumulated on those trees, and the leaves added even more weight for them to handle causing some of them to snap. Kentucky Power officials say where trees are snapping, power lines are going down too.

"It started hitting a little bit quicker and fell a little bit further than a lot of people expected last night," said Bob Shurtleff with Kentucky Power.

At peak nearly 5,600 people in Pike County were without power.

"We were here like I said at six this morning, and we made some big head way today. We'll continue working into the night," said Shurtleff.

That leaves people like Kenneth Osborne wondering when his lights and heat will come back on.

"When you live out in these mountains you got to pretty well survive. I just pray for the people in the communities and the elderly, even the animals out here," said Osborne.

The Osbornes say they were told it could be November 1 before their power is back on, but they say they are thankful they have their fireplace to help keep them warm.

All power in Pike County is expected to be restored by midnight Thursday. Officials say they hope to have it even sooner than that.
