Thousands of people are still without water in Knott County Wednesday afternoon after two pumps failed at the water treatment plant.
Officials say a dive team might have found the source of the problem.
Crews have been out all day long at the Carr Creek Water Treatment Facility.
They are trying to pull the pumps out of the water but the process could take some time.
A dive team was here to check everything underwater before they pulled the pumps out they found algae and debris on the screens around the intake valve.
That was the root of the problem and has since been cleaned up but now they must make sure the pumps are not damaged.
Judge Executive Randy Thompson says more than likely they are damaged.
He says crews are working as quickly as possible to try to get the water back online
“Come Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and possibly Friday evening we should have everything back to a sense of normalcy,” Judge Thompson said.
Crews will be continuing to work trying to pull out the pump and trying to get it replaced.
In the meantime, the water distribution centers be open again Thursday morning at 9.
Those centers are located at the following locations:
• Carr Creek Water Treatment Plant
• Fisty Fire Department
• Ball Creek Fire Department
• Lotts Creek Fire Department
