LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) - One year later, a Laurel County woman is remembering the dangerous storms that caused her to lose a leg.

24-year-old, Amy Harris was thrown from a trailer in East Bernstadt and suffered life-threatening injuries, including losing one of her legs when last year's tornado hit.

Her positive outlook on life has carried her through a year full of surgeries and rehab; a journey that she says was not always easy.

She says she'll never forget what happened one year ago.

“I remember looking out a window and the sky just got really dark,” said Harris.

When a tornado warning was issued recently, she admits that it scared her, “I was saying come on we got to go now, and I know I probably shouldn't act like that, but I mean stuff can just happen in a split second, and when you've been there and done that, you know.”

But she has come a long way since her many broken bones and the loss of her leg.

“I mean I pretty much had to learn to walk and everything again. For close to 2 months maybe three, I couldn't even walk,” said Harris.

She even jokes and laughs about one of the perks to having only one leg.

“When I go get a pedicure I get it half priced, they don't charge me,” said Harris.

So as she continues to find the silver linings from such a traumatic part of her life.

“I mean, yeah it bothers me. I mean, nobody wants to lose a body part but it happened so might as well make the best of it. I'm alive and that's all that matters,” said Harris.

She plans to walk through the next year just as hopeful.

Amy says she plans to have her permanent prosthetic within a week.
