Jackson, Ky. Officials in Kentucky are urging motorists to be careful in construction zones.
"We always urge motorists to watch out for vehicles that have flashing lights on them," said H.B. Elkins, public information officer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. "The workers will be wearing some kind of high visibility garments. We will post signs warning of the work ahead."
According to Elkins, many drivers do not change their behavior when traveling through work zones.
"Drivers tend to drive normally through work zones," he said. "They don't heed the reduced speed limits. They don't heed the signs. They don't watch out for flaggers, personnel. They get distracted sometimes."
Fines for traffic violations in many work zones are doubled, Elkins said.
