Tri-City Empty Stocking Fund celebrates 32 years

Updated: Wed 7:32 AM, Dec 05, 2012

CUMBERLAND, Ky. (WYMT) - 32 years ago, some laid off coal miners in Harlan County wanted to help their neighbors.

More than three decades later, that tradition continues.

Officials with the Tri-City Empty Stocking Fund wrapped up night two of their annual auction Tuesday night on the Cumberland campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College.

The event, broadcast on local cable access, brings in donations from those wanting to help the less fortunate.

Jim "Muggins" Bennett, the founder of the organization, says delivery day is always an emotional event.

"When you go to those houses, give those kids gifts and give that big food box to the people that live there. There is your Christmas right there. That is your Christmas." Bennett said.

There were several items left over to be auctioned off, so there will be another night of the auction next week.

The day is yet to be determined.

The gift baskets will be delivered on the 15th.
