Turnout expected to be low in 16th district special election

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - David Williams recently resigned from his senate seat to accept a position as a circuit judge. A special election was held Tuesday in the 16th district to choose his successor. While election officials say this is a very important race, they are not expecting much of a turnout and say most folks probably just stayed home.

Both Republican State Representative Sara Beth Gregory of Monticello and Democrat school teacher Bill Conn of Williamsburg say they are proud of the job their campaigns have done sharing their respective visions for the 16th district.

"I think we've done a good job of getting out our message," said Gregory. "Getting out a message about the conservative values, about more responsible government."

"We have purposely just stayed on our message about the local economies and what we can do to help grow that, how to fix the local drug problems that we've had in our communities," said Conn.

However, both candidates say the deciding factor will be voter turnout, which officials predict will be very low, single-digit in some precincts. Officials say voters are experiencing election fatigue.

"This makes our fifth special in fourteen months, making us seven elections in fourteen months, so Whitley County is quite tired of elections," said Whitley County clerk Kay Schwartz.

Despite predictions of low voter turnout in Tuesday's special election, voters we talked to said they thought it was important to get out and let their voice be heard.

"I always try to vote," said voter Rena Sester. "I think everyone should come out and vote even though I know it's a real busy time."

The candidate voters choose will begin their senatorial duties when the General Assembly convenes January 8th.
